SMA-VWIL Museum

The Staunton Military Academy (SMA) Alumni Foundation – Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership (VWIL) Museum is a joint endeavor between the two organizations. The mission of the museum is to preserve the past (SMA Legacy) while challenging the future (VWIL Program).

The SMA-VWIL Museum was officially opened at a dedication ceremony on July 27, 2001 as part the SMA Alumni Annual All-Class Reunion festivities. Since then, over 1,000 people have visited the museum. The museum is operated and staffed by SMA alumni volunteers from Staunton and surrounding towns and by VWIL cadets.

The museum facility is comprised of the following: SMA-VWIL Museum, SMA Archives, SMA Alumni Association office, SMA Memorial Wall and Walk of Honor.

None of this would have been possible without the support of MBC and VWIL officials, principally Dr. Tyson, Dr. Brenda Bryant and BG Michael Bissell, the funding support provided by Hunter W. Henry, SMA ’46, project management & coordination by Mark Orr, SMA ’73, museum curator & archival by Brocky Nicely, SMA ’65, and the many SMA alumni that helped with this project through funding support and/or volunteering their time to put it together. Most, but not all, of these generous and dedicated people are listed on the SMA-VWIL Museum Plank Owners plaque in the museum.

We invite all SMA and VWIL alumni and friends to visit the museum. You’ll be glad you did!
